Building a Supersonic Nerf Cannon - Exploring the Limits of Nerf Dart Speed

TLDRIn this video, I set out to build a supersonic Nerf cannon by upgrading a solenoid valve design. By using a burst disk and helium as the propellant gas, I was able to achieve speeds of up to 1,500 feet per second. I also tested the cannon's power by shooting through a half-inch pine board and other targets. Through schlieren imaging, I visualized the shockwave created by the supersonic Nerf dart. Additionally, I partnered with Skillshare to learn more about design and improve my logo.

Q&A

How did you achieve supersonic speeds with the Nerf cannon?

By upgrading the design with a burst disk and using helium as the propellant gas, I was able to achieve speeds of up to 1,500 feet per second.

What materials did you use for the burst disk?

I used projector overhead film to create the burst disks.

What targets did you test the cannon on?

I tested the cannon's power by shooting through a half-inch pine board and other targets, including tomatoes and glass.

What is schlieren imaging and how did you use it in the video?

Schlieren imaging is a technique that allows you to visualize disturbances in the air. I used it to capture the shockwave created by the supersonic Nerf dart.

How did partnering with Skillshare help improve your design skills?

Through Skillshare, I was able to learn from professionals and improve my design skills, including logo design.
